Reference Guide
The reference guide contains instructions on how to install and use the desktop LFDCS, instructions on how to review LFDCS data generated in near real time by a DMON-equipped autonomous platform, and the analyst protocol for detecting sei, fin, humpback, and right whales in the northwest Atlantic Ocean. The protocol is used so that results are standardized and consistent among different analysts. The link below brings you to the latest version of the Guide.
Training videos
Recorded training modules are available to guide users through the use of both the desktop LFDCS as well as the analysis of near real-time LFDCS data generated from DMON-equipped autonomous platforms. Note that an in-person practicum is required to be fully qualified as a near real-time DMON/LFDCS analyst. A set of training videos is available from a tutorial provided on June 3, 2024 at the 10th Detection, Classification, Localization and Density Estimation Workshop in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. This tutorial covers the fundamentals of the LFDCS and how to use LFDCS 1.0 on a Mac using a full Interactive Data Language (IDL) license. The second video is from a webinar on May 9, 2025 that describes how to use the new LFDCS 2.0, which runs on Mac, Windows and Linux with an IDL Runtime license. Note that the actual functionality of LFDCS 2.0 is identical to LFDCS 1.0, but LFDCS 2.0 uses a graphical user interface and runs on multiple platforms to make the system more user-friendly and widely accessible.
